Bali's Day - Melasti

I always love Bali though, and was fortune by the opportunity travelling to Bali quite often within a year, even though it’s for works. My last two weeks trip to Bali was primarily to work for a project, but this time has bought me some very interesting experiences that I was very much enjoy and suspect it will remain that for a while.

During my time in Bali , it was a couple days before Nyepi’s day (Bali’s day of silence). On the Nyepi itself, no body doing their normal activities, in every street and corner of Bali is very quiet. No car allowed in the street, people also have to stay in their houses with no activities, no light (or the lights must be kept low), not even radio or TV. The only people who can be allowed to be outdoors are usually traditional Balinese Security man who called “Pecalangs”. They will patrols all around the street to make sure the prohibitions are being followed.

A couple days before Nyepi’s day is called Melasti day. Melasti is meant to clean the pratima or arca or pralingga (statue), with symbols that help to concentrate the mind in order to become closer to God. It is dedicated to Sanghyang Widhi Wasa and is performed at the beach to respect them as the owner of The Land and Sea. 3 to 4 days before Nyepi, people are together come to the river or the beach with their traditional costume in long and colourful ceremonies.

I was lucky witnesses the ceremony of Melasti at Kuta Beach March 2010. I was become minority among huge number of Balinese who doing the ceremony on the Kuta Beach, and Iwas amazed by the way of the ceremonies. They all very focus in their pray and activities. Indeed Melasti day has made Bali a unique island.

Love Bali, love their culture, people and everything. Bali amazed me....and I Love Ibu Pertiwi - Indonesia
